Using GPIO with generic GPIO device?

Does the Device Function “GPIO” only work with the Tulip gateway, or can it be used with other generic GPIO devices, such as a USB GPIO?

The device triggers for GPIO specifically refer to the GPIO of the Tulip I/O Gateway.
