Edge IO HDMI will not work

I have tried 2 edge IOS, 4 different monitors/Tvs and 3 different cables and I can not get any of them to show a picture on the screen. I can see the Boot screen, but once the Edge IO boots nothing. If I go to the Shop Floor - Station area online I see this (picture attached) but I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I never had a probelm in the past using Edge IO at workstations.

Hi whipplems, thanks for reaching out and sharing the screenshot.

Just to clarify, the Tulip Edge IO is a headless device, meaning it does not support video output like HDMI. Even if you briefly see a boot screen, that’s likely coming from the compute module during power-on, but it’s not intended to display a user interface.

This is expected behavior. To confirm the Edge IO is working properly:

  1. Open the Device Portal in a browser while on the same network.
  2. Check the status of I/O, network, and device info.
  3. Confirm the Edge IO is registered and assigned to a station in your Tulip instance.
  4. Make sure the station has a valid app assigned if you’re expecting runtime behavior.

Let me know what kind of behavior you’re expecting from the device and we can help confirm if the setup is correct.

This is expected behavior. To confirm the Edge IO is working properly:

  1. Open the Device Portal in a browser while on the same network.
Both units can be accessed and one is even running node red. So I can open up the app and get the real time data.
  2. Check the status of I/O, network, and device info. Good
  3. Confirm the Edge IO is registered and assigned to a station in your Tulip instance. They are
  4. Make sure the station has a valid app assigned if you’re expecting runtime behavior. I have assigned a valid app that runs on other computers.

The expected behavior is that when assign an inference and an app to run on the edge IO that the HDMI port will send a signal to the display. I have done this at my previous job with no issue.

Thanks for sharing the screenshots and background, it sounds like everything on the Edge IO side is set up correctly and working as expected.

Just to clarify what’s happening with the display: HDMI output is no longer supported on Edge IO devices as of OS60. While it may have worked in the past, Tulip officially deprecated support for running the Tulip Player on Edge IO due to performance limitations.

You can find the full announcement here:
Tulip Player on Edge IO Deprecation (OS60)

“We will be deprecating support for running Player on Edge IO devices with the release of OS60… the performance of Player on EdgeIO is inadequate.”

The HDMI port remains on the device for legacy reasons, but it’s no longer intended for visual output. If you need to display an app on a monitor, we’d recommend using a Windows, Linux, or Android device that supports Tulip Player with HDMI.

Happy to help you identify alternatives if needed.

One of the reason I went with tulip over your other options back in January is for using the edge IO to hook up to monitors rather than having to buy a separate computer for addition couple hundred dollars for each area, plus now all the IT support I will now need to hook everything up. This make me look really bad in front of my boss cause of the thousands of dollars this will add to the project that schedule to use tulip devices over then next couple of years. Thanks for making me look bad, and affecting my bonus on at the end of the year for project cost efficiency.

The fact that I can not use Phidget devices with the computer app makes this even worse because I will still need multiple device in major areas rather than one that does everything.

Hi @whipplems,

The core reason for deprecating Edge IO is that it does not and has not met the core requirements for running Tulip Player as outlined here.

I understand and hear your frustration around this.

I would be curious to understand how we can look to utilize Edge IO in other parts of your shop floor operation.

For Phidgets, the Edge SDK will soon support TCP and allow you to communicate with Phidgets and Windows Player.

Hi @whipplems,

I completely understand where you’re coming from.

I’ve passed this along to your Customer Success Manager, and she’ll be reaching out to you directly to talk through your setup and help find the best path forward.

Let us know if there’s anything else I can help clarify in the meantime.
